Many years ago, when my brother and I were about eight (me) and twelve (him), our family took us to Acadia for the weekend, from our home in Bristol, Maine. It was not our first visit, and we were not traveling that far to get there (compared to many visitors), but nevertheless, it's hard for kids that age to get used to any four+ hour drive. Upon arrival, we checked into the campground, and then headed over to do a hike that our Dad had been telling us about for the past four hours: the Beehive. We had been on many family hikes, and as much as we enjoyed them in retrospect, they were always daunting at first... and not to mention grueling. The Beehive turned out to be an amazing hike that was exciting at every turn, and truly adventuresome for two young kids like my brother and me. The iron rungs, bridges, and steep cliffs were heartpoundingly enjoyable, and the views were spectacular (even for an eight-year-old kid). It was a great -- and memorable -- trip.
