Of Special Note

The TUFTED DUCK, the KING EIDER, the NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, and the VARIED THRUSHES are no longer reliable.

Waterfowl migration is getting underway. An increasing number of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS are being reported in southern Maine. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS are taking advantage of feeders more and more in the southern part of the state as well. Many observers are reporting GREAT HORNED OWLS calling.

The species mentioned below are: SNOW GOOSE, BRANT, WOOD DUCK, GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, MERLIN, PEREGRINE FALCON, KILLDEER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, COMMON GRACKLE, PINE GROSBEAK, COMMON REDPOLL, HOARY REDPOLL and EVENING GROSBEAK.

York County

At least one male VARIED THRUSH remained at a private home in Saco at 169 Watson Mill Road at least through March 4. Recent attempts have not been successful.

No successful reports of the Hollis NORTHERN HAWK OWL have been received recently.

A SNOW GOOSE was on the marsh at Cape Neddick Harbor on March 7.

Seen at Biddeford Pool on March 8, were 45 to 50 BRANT, six SNOW GEESE, a pair of GADWALL, a WOOD DUCK, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and a dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.

Thirty plus COMMON REDPOLLS visited feeders along Hills Beach Road in Biddeford on March 9.

Two PEREGRINE FALCONS continue at Saco Island in Saco.

Six WOOD DUCKS were at Marston's Marina in Saco on March 7.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen along Spring Street in Saco on March 8.

Greater Portland

Recent attempts to locate the drake TUFTED DUCK on the Presumpscot River in downtown Westbrook have been unsuccessful. Other species in that area on the 12th included the drake NORTHERN PINTAIL, an immature ICELAND GULL, and 20 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS.

No recent reports of the KING EIDER at Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth have been received.

Highlights from Stroudwater Crossing in Portland on March 12 included: a WOOD DUCK pair, a KILLDEER, and an immature SNOW GOOSE.

A hen BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and an immature GLAUCOUS GULL were in the Back Cove of Portland on March 12.

Ducks filtering into Scarborough Marsh this past week included at least six NORTHERN PINTAILS and 20 + GREEN-WINGED TEAL at Dunstan Landing plus an AMERICAN WIGEON and a WOOD DUCK behind the Pelreco building near the end of Pine Point Road.

Seen from Mackworth Island in Falmouth on March 6 were two COMMON GRACKLES on land and 41 GREATER SCAUP on the water.

A flock of 10 PINE GROSBEAKS were working crabapples on Main Street in Yarmouth on March 9.

An immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was in Gray on March 6.

Lewiston-Auburn

A mixed flock of 100 PINE SISKINS and 50 COMMON REDPOLLS were in Buckfield on March 6.

A flock of well over 100 COMMON REDPOLLS were in Lewiston on March 6.

The VARIED THRUSH in Winthrop has not been seen since last weekend.

Midcoast

The latest report of the NORTHERN HAWK OWL along Rt. 130 in Bristol, 0.4 miles south of the Bristol Consolidated School, was received March 6.

Central Maine

Twenty-five PINE GROSBEAKS were on Norfolk Street in Bangor and three with about 300 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on Broadway in Bangor on March 6.

A MERLIN returned to the Jefferson Street area of Bangor on March 10.

A large flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in the crabapple trees behind McDonalds in Newport on March 6.

Northern Maine

A HOARY REDPOLL was identified in Crystal on March 8.

Both PINE and EVENING GROSBEAKS continue in good numbers in Aroostook County.

The SNOW BUNTING pulse continues as the birds seem to be shifting back northward.
