Of Special Note

No surprises among the true standouts in this week's report: TUFTED DUCK, KING EIDER, NORTHERN HAWK OWL and VARIED THRUSH.

Many birders in southern Maine reported a significant spike in the number of COMMON REDPOLLS at their feeders after the last snowstorm. RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS continue to push their range limits. TURKEY VLTURES and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS are trickling into the southern part of the state.

Other noteworthy species in the report include: BRANT, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, PEREGRINE FALCON, ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, DOVEKIE, RAZORBILL, SNOWY OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, PINE GROSBEAK, and EVENING GROSBEAK.

York County

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL continues to be seen along Rte. 35 in Hollis, sitting on the power lines at the corner of Hemlock Cove Road on February 25.

Two male VARIED THRUSHES continue at a private home in Saco at 169 Watson Mill Road at least through February 24. The gracious homeowner continues to allow visitors and requests that you park in the driveway and not on the street for safety purposes. In order to view the thrush(es), you must walk around the right side of the house and look under the feeders to the back and left. Please honor the home owner's hospitality.

RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, mostly males in small numbers, arrived at multiple York County locations this week.

At least one PEREGRINE FALCON continued on Saco Island in Saco through February 26.

A drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was among Common Goldeneyes at Nubble Light in Cape Neddick earlier this week.

Greater Portland

A drake TUFTED DUCK continues in the Presumpscot River just below the falls at Bridge Street in downtown Westbrook and was seen on February 24 with four RING-NECKED DUCKS.

A drake KING EIDER continues, albeit sporadically, at Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth at least through February 25. A RAZORBILL was seen on February 21 at Dyer Point and BRANT continue off Dyer Point and Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth as well.

A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Scarborough on February 25 and several more over Falmouth on February 27.

A FOX SPARROW wintering in Scarborough was seen again visiting feeders on February 21.

A lone PINE GROSBEAK was at Southborough Business Park in South Portland on February 25.

Three immature GLAUCOUS GULLS, one an apparent hybrid GLAUCOUS x HERRING GULL, were seen at the mouth of Mill Creek behind the Hannaford's in South Portland on February 21.

An adult ICELAND GULL was perched near the Portland Fish Pier in the Old Port in Portland on February 21.

A flock of roughly 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS flew over Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm on February 26.

Lewiston-Auburn

Ten PINE GROSBEAKS were in the crabapple trees at Burger King on Lisbon Street in Lewiston on February 22.

A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on February 22 at the Franco American Heritage Center on Cedar Street in Lewiston.

A mixed flock of 60 BOHEMIAN and CEDAR WAXWINGS was feeding on viburnum at Home Depot on Mt. Auburn Avenue in Auburn on February 22.

Midcoast

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL remains reliable in Bristol. It is consistently being found perched atop trees along Rt. 130, ~0.4 miles south of the Bristol Consolidated School.

A TURKEY VULTURE was soaring over Route One in Wiscasset on February 21.

Kennebec River Valley (Augusta-Waterville)

The white-winged gull show continues at Hatch Hill Landfill in Augusta with an immature GLAUCOUS GULL and 5 immature ICELAND GULLS on February 21.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found in Clinton on February 22.

Central Maine

A flock of 300 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen on Prentiss Street in Bangor on February 25.

A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen on the Orono Landing Road in Orono on February 25.

A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER visited a feeder in Garland on February 24.

Downeast

A SNOWY OWL AND 6 PINE GROSBEAKS were seen on Penobscot Mountain in Acadia National Park on February 25.

A DOVEKIE was off Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park on February 27.

A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was calling again in Town Hill on February 27. A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was photographed roosting on a power line in Machias on February 23.

A half dozen female and immature PINE GROSBEAKS were seen in front of St. Saviour's Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor on February 26.

A BROWN THRASHER continues at a feeding station in Bar Harbor and was recently joined by a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER. Two more RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS are visiting a different feeding station in Bar Harbor.

Western Mountains

EVENING GROSBEAKS continue at a feeder in Anson.

Northern Maine

A RED-TAILED HAWK, three PINE GROSBEAKS and 20 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen on US Rte 2 between Dyer Brook and Island Falls in southern Aroostook County on February 26.

EVENING and PINE GROSBEAKS continue to be abundant in New Sweden.
