Of Special Note

Top birds this week are: a TUFTED DUCK, NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, VARIED THRUSHES, and a probable BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK. Images of all of these birds and more can be viewed on our website: http://www.maineaudubon.org/nature/birdalert_gallery.php

Other standouts include: KING EIDER, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, TURKEY VULTURE, PEREGRINE FALCON, ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, RAZORBILL, SNOWY OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, GRAY CATBIRD, LARK SPARROW, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, PINE GROSBEAK, HOARY REDPOLL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.

BOHEMIAN WAWXING flocks remain widespread. Above average numbers of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and AMERICAN ROBINS continue in southern Maine. Scattered reports of COMMON REPOLLS have come from all over.

York County

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was sitting on a post in a yard in York on January 26.

On January 25, a SNOWY OWL was perched on Wood Island, visible from East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool.

Two male VARIED THRUSHES continue at a private home in Saco at 169 Watson Mill Road at least through January 30. The gracious homeowner continues to allow visitors and requests that you park in the driveway and not on the street for safety purposes. In order to view the thrush(es) you must walk around the right side of the house and look under the feeders to the back and left. Please honor the home owner's hospitality.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was photographed in Hollis on January 25 at the intersection of Swanton Drive and Route 35.

Birds seen in Saco along the river this week included five COMMON MERGANSERS from the Saco Yacht Club, two PEREGRINE FALCONS continuing on the MERC stack on Saco Island, and a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE seen from Water Street.

Greater Portland

Intermittent sightings (January 24, 25, and 29) of a drake KING EIDER among COMMON EIDERS continue just off Cape Elizabeth's Dyer Point. BRANT, HARLEQUIN DUCKS and RAZORBILLS have also been at Dyer Point this week. BRANT are being seen at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth as well.

The VARIED THRUSH at 31 Spurwink Avenue in South Portland continued at least through January 25. Please observe the feeders to the left of the home from the road only. Off-street parking is just beyond the house. A female RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD and a SWAMP SPARROW continue there as well.

An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE was to the left of the Hampton Inn on Philbrick Drive in South Portland on January 26.

White-winged gulls in Greater Portland on January 25 included an ICELAND GULL at Mill Creek Cove in South Portland, four ICELAND GULLS and a GLAUCOUS GULL at the Portland Fish Pier, and an ICELAND GULL from Windsor Street in Portland.

The TUFTED DUCK has reappeared on the Presumpscot River in downtown Westbrook but sightings are infrequent. The only open water is just below the falls under the bridge at Bridge Street. Three NORTHERN PINTAILS were there as well among the many Mallards on January 29.

Lewiston-Auburn

A male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was spotted at the Auburn Middle School on January 24.

Midcoast

An interesting grosbeak has been frequenting a private yard in South Hope for most of January. A compelling argument can be made that it is a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK but definitive documentation remains elusive. See images on our website.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was discovered on January 26, roosting in a field on Pennellville Road in Brunswick, and was present again on January 27.

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was hunting gray squirrels in a backyard on Sabino Road in West Bath on January 26.

A wintering TURKEY VULTURE in the Small Point area of Phippsburg was seen as recently as January 29.

A GRAY CATBIRD remains at the end of Green Point Road on Atkins Bay in Phippsburg.

Two hen LESSER SCAUP were seen in the cove just north of the dam at Parker's Head in Phippsburg on January 29.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL continues in Bristol. It is consistently being found perched atop trees along Rt. 130, ~0.4 miles south of the Bristol Consolidated School.
